A Prayer For The Families Of The Sandy Hook Elementary School Children in Newtown, CT

Our Gracious Heavenly Father,

Since we heard of the tragedy, we’ve felt shock and sadness and grief. Our hearts are aching as we think about the 20 innocent children who were struck down yesterday. It makes us so sad to know that those precious children did not return to their parent’s home in Newtown. Yet we know that YOU welcomed each of those children to Your heavenly home to be with you. They are in the arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ. They are in a place of pure love and joy, where there are no more tears or sadness.

And yet we also know that there is much sadness for those left behind. We think of those parents and grandparents and brothers and sisters whose hearts are breaking. May the peace of Christ, that surpasses all understanding guard their hearts. You have promised to be close to those who are broken hearted. May you surround them with your love. May your precious Holy Spirit strengthen them in the days and weeks ahead.

We also pray for the six adults who were killed yesterday: the principle, the psychologist and the other staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School. They were teaching and helping the children when their lives were cut short. May their souls rest in peace. May you also welcome them into your eternal kingdom. We pray for their families. Comfort them and surround them with your love.

We pray for the police officers and other first responders whose hearts must be breaking. Ease their emotional pain. Help them to look to you for strength and healing.

We pray for all of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary. Take away any fear that they may be feeling. Draw them close to you. Give wisdom to the teachers and staff. Give wisdom to their pastors and priests and their counselors. We ask your help for the community of Newton. Surround them with your eternal love.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
