How To Achieve Your Goals And Dreams

As you work towards your goals and dreams, realize that there will be delays, roadblocks and set backs. This does not mean that you should give up. You must be Persistent. It is one of the key characteristics of successful people.
I have not always been persistent. Fortunately, my sixth grade teacher, whom I deeply respected, wrote something on my report card that changed my life. Mr. Goodwin wrote, “Del can do anything he sets his mind to accomplish.” His words helped me believe that I could achieve my goals. I can still remember the pride and optimism I felt as I read his words. “If Mr. Goodwin believes I can do anything I set my mind to, then it must be true.”
Whenever I was tempted to give up, I would ask myself, “Have I really set my mind to do this? Have I tried as hard as I could?” When I asked myself these questions, I usually came to the conclusion that it was too soon to quit. I would keep trying, in spite of doubts regarding a successful outcome.
Surprisingly, it often only took a little bit more effort and persistence before things would start to change for the better. This phenomenon was also observed by S. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A restaurants. He wrote, “The difference between success and failure is often about five percent more effort. But we start to see miracles take place when we truly commit ourselves.” Mr. Cathy overcame huge obstacles and set backs to build his fast food chain, which now has over 1500 restaurants.
Are you tempted to give up on a goal or dream because it now seems impossible? I encourage you to hang in there. Be persistent! It is always too soon to quit. As Mr. Cathy also wrote, “No goal is too high if we climb with care and confidence.”
